When talking about the 3 R's order mattered - the first step was to reduce. I'm trying to apply this to more than just garbage. We're currently looking at ditching our cable tv and perhaps even the home phone line. The money isn't even the big issue - it's the fact that we're paying for things that we're barely using. The fact that the pvr cuts off programs and we lose the last 30 seconds and have to find it on the internet anyways just adds salt to the wound.
That's not to say that we won't watch tv - we buy plenty of dvd's, find episodes that we missed (again, cursed rogers and pvr) and now I'm looking at buying a OTA HD antenna.
In the end I think that I'd feel better if I just read more books and exercise more. I have a bit of a love hate relationship with tv.
At this point the only shows that we watch are: Glee, The Daily Show, Big Bang Theory, and How I Met Your Mother. The only one that I'm concerned that we'll not be able to get in a timely manner is The Daily Show. We'll figure it out.
You could always just watch The Daily Show online (http://watch.thecomedynetwork.ca/the-daily-show-with-jon-stewart/). I'm not sure how timely they are with putting new episodes online, but currently the episode from thursday is online. If you go this route, you may want to consider hooking up a computer to your TV. It can be great for watching things that are available online. Also, Netflix recently became available in Canada. You may want to check it out if you ditch the cable.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a computer hooked up the the tv, but we do have a ps3 and a wii. I'll check it out and see if I can play it though either of those.
ReplyDeleteThe bad part is that I don't think that the browsers in either platform support any kind of html5 video (yet) and their flash impl really sucks (low memory?). We've crashed the browser on the ps3 by watching a slideshow on flickr. :-(
I'm keeping netflix in mind, but at this point I'm not sure that we'd even be able to make it worth while, even at 8 $ / month.
Either way I don't want to feel like I *should* be watching tv because we've already paid for it.
