While watching The Hour (great show) they showed a commercial that they won't show in 47 (?) US states. It's by a group that wants to stop landmines world wide. Watch it.
I just think that people in developed nations have no clue what it would be like to live in a place like that. I have no idea. Still, I don't understand how anyone can support landmines.
I'm assuming they must have mentioned it in the show, but the reason that the Americans won't sign any sort of anti-landmine treaty is that they're relying on anti-personnel landmines to protect their troops in Korea.
ReplyDeleteThey're refusing outright to sign anything that doesn't include an exception for Korea and for being able to use them in a time of war, which of course would defeat the purpose.
One of the biggest reasons that the americans don't have any qualms about land mines is that they don't have to deal with the aftermath. There hasn't been a war on American soil since the civil war, and there was no landmines then. If the americans had mines in the ground in their own country, they'd be calling to ban them just like everyone else.
