I feel so small...

Ever thought that you are big? Important? Check out the scale of things and tell me if you still feel that way. ;-)

  1. It kind of reminds me of this quote from HitchHiker's guide to the galaxy.
Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the drug store, but that's just peanuts to space.

  2. And Antares (the largest shown) isn't even the biggest. I checked it out (because i'm a big geek) and the biggest star is actually The Pistol Star. It's 100 times bigger than the sun. which compared to Antares which is only 15-18 times the size of the sun.

  3. I don't know man, in that last one the Antares looks pretty big, while the Sun is only 1 pixel. It seems like Antares is at least 1000 times bigger (by volume).

  4. If the pistol star is 100 times bigger than the sun and the pics i have seen showing and comparing Antares and then the sun as one pixel are accurate.. then surely that pic of Antares is thousands of pixels (times) bigger than the sun.
I know its hard for a knowledge type (geeky dude) to admit being factually wrong ...but its good for ur development..how bout a response ?

  5. Well, after rereading what I had read, which was information on wikipedia, see links below, I realize that I had misread a bit. It seems that Antares is 15-18 times heavier, than the sun, while the Pistol star is 100 time heavier than the sun. However, Anteres is actually larger in radius than the Pistol Star. The radius of Antares is 510 radius' of the sun, which would make the picture pretty well to scale. The radius of the Pistol star is only 300-340 radius' of the sun. So, I guess I was off, but if you look at the list of largest stars on wikipedia (also linked below), then you will see that there are many stars which are larger than Antares.
