My computer is driving me nuts. It's sooooooooo slow. Really, all that I can do with it is use firefox. If that's all I'm doing, it's okay. I was waiting for leopard to come out so that I wouldn't have to pay for the upgrade. I'm not sure that I can wait till September. Is my sanity worth the cost of just getting a new computer now and eating the cost of the upgrade?
Right now I am scanning some old family photos... it's very slow going. A lot of time just waiting for the computer to respond back. For example, in windows explorer, right clicking, I have to wait 15-20 seconds for the menu to show up. Never mind the time it takes to scan the photo.
*sigh* I may break down in the next while and just buy a mac. I don't think I'm going to go cheap either. Lots of memory, lots of disk space. We'll see.
Your computer isn't that slow, is it? What are the hardware specs?
ReplyDeleteIt could just be overloaded with crap from over the years -- maybe try saving all of your important files, format the drive and put a fresh XP install on it.
...and I wouldn't bother getting a Mac until 10.5 comes out. There will be new hardware soon too, they are due.
ReplyDeleteIt's not the processor, it's the amount of the ram.
ReplyDeleteI've got a 1.8 GHz box, 256 M of ram and a 20 (18) G drive. I moved off large media (movies, music, etc) onto an external drive, so I have ~3-4 G of disk space free.
I'd wipe it, but I looked for the install disk and I can't find it. And I think that if I did, I'm not sure if I'd have to buy Norton again...
Really though, I'm scared. I've never wiped my primary box before.
If only I could find the install disks...
Of, and when do you think they are going to come out with hardware? Is this a general rumour or just a feeling? I couldn't find anything with a quick googling...
ReplyDeleteIt should still be performing better than that. I can help you wipe it. We'll move all of the data first.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Apple hardware: It's just a feeling. The rumour sites are also buzzing. Apple doesn't announce new hardware until just before it comes out, so you won't find anything but rumours.
Thanks man. ;-)
ReplyDeleteAt this point I am trying to figure out if I need a windows box at all. I keep on hearing really good things about ubuntu.
I think that my next steps might be:
1) wipe my fedora (core 2) box that I have not used much and try out ubuntu.
2) run the live CD on the laptop and see if it can do things like connect via WiFi
If those go well, I'll do the following:
3) copy all files from my "backup external drive" to my NAS drive
4) format the external drive to FAT32 from NTFS
5) copy all the files back
6) copy all files on my laptop to the NAS drive
7) cross fingers
8) wipe the laptop, installing linux.
Now, there is less than 1 month till I get married, so I am not sure if I will do it in that time. It seems risky with all the work that I have to do. Maybe I'll just do the first couple of steps.
If you want to run linux on the box, I suggest using XFCE as your desktop environment. Not quite as sleek and sexy as gnome or KDE, but it will speed up that low-memory box for sure. You can run XFCE on Ubuntu with Xubuntu. Also, I must provide my mandatory recommendation for Mandriva, as I find it a lot better than Ubuntu.
