We just moved from having Rogers to another ISP. I was afraid that I would loose the Yahoo! Photos and all the photos we have there. Well, we half lost it. My favourite thing about it was that I was able to upload the full sized photos and be able to download the same later. It was a great off site storage / backup for all the shots that I didn't want to loose. But with just a straight Yahoo! account I can no longer download them again. Crappy.
I have to figure out another good place to keep my photos for long term storage. *sigh*
Jim, there are two good places for photos I know of:
ReplyDeleteThe blogosphere really likes: http://www.flickr.com/
You can tag your pictures and such.
Travis and others like: http://spaces.msn.com/
It's easy to use and hooks into your MSN Messenger account so people know when you have new pictures.
Thanks man. I looked into flickr and so far it looks good. For what I want I would have to get the "pro" account at 25$/year, but that's okay with me. I'll pay to not loose my photos and memories.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to look for a bit longer before I make a commitment though. ;-)
You'd probably be better off paying for some hosting and getting your own domain name. After putting up with too many services being shut down on the internet, and all the hassles associated with switching IPs, it's probably just better to do your work. It'll end up more expensive than a flickr account, but there's a lot more you can do with it. Most hosting packages come with photo management and blog software ready to install at the click of a button, and they usually have quite a few more features. Plus you have full control over the files on the server.
ReplyDeleteI keep on thinking about getting my own hosting, but most of the time I end up killing the idea. My primary experience with web apps in making J2EE apps (and some small perl apps). It's very hard / expensive to find places for Java hosting and I don't really feel like learning a new tech (right now) in my spare time.
ReplyDeleteI find that when I get home I just want to use something to get the job done, not build it first.
One of my main motivations for moving the images to an external site is for backup which means I need to move up the full size images. Right now I have at least 3 Gb of images I would like to save. That's also a consideration when considering the hosting option.
