Yes, I know flash is evil, but don't we all need a little evil now and then? Just kidding. I'm talking about the photo thing on the right side of the blog. They call it a "Flickr badge". I could have used plain ol' html or have a nice flash thing-ma-bobber. I sort of like it, mostly 'cause I think that it's somewhere that Flash does well in: images and rich media like that.
I hate Flash being used for text and put in little scroll boxes that I can't use my browser for, can't change the font size, can't load into different tabs while I read the current one. I guess it's like any tech, you can use it well or badly.
If you take a look at my photo stream and some of the pics seem old, it's 'cause they are. I'm getting around to uploading some of the shots that are several years old that my dad took (I asked him if I could put them up). I just figure that it's more likely that I will be able to see them and other's than if they are buried on my hd somewhere. Next step: digital picture frame. ;-)
Yeah, I use the flashblock extension for firefox, and I have to say, that it works pretty well. I only see flash when I want to see it. It can be a little annoying with flash only sites, since there's usually 3 or 4 different flash sections you have to start up, but I generally leave a site anyway when it's entirely flash.
ReplyDeleteI have to stick up for flash since I don't see enough of it. I personally love flash sites. My PC is not up to date by any means and flash sites work fine. I'm not saying that all flash sites are designed properly but condemning a site because it is done entirely in flash isn't right in my mind. If I had my way (I haven't checked to see if it's possible) but I would insert flash into my reply for spite...but that's just me I guess :)
ReplyDeletehahaha...
ReplyDeleteI don't like it when I am used to having a web page behave in a certain way but be frustrated with a flash site because it doesn't do or work the way I want it to.
That and they were always slow over dial up which isn't a problem for me anymore.
Like all things there is a place for them but they can be overused.
Yeah, my computer is way out of date, we're talking P2, 266 here. Some flash sites just crawl on my computer. I find that in most cases, flash sites just make it harder to find the information I'm looking for. There are some great uses of flash, such as animated cartoons, games, other multimedia uses. But building then entire website in flash, with no HTML alternative, are not a good idea. They genrally look good, but cause problems with bookmarking, search engines, using the back button, as well as many other problems.
ReplyDeleteWhat I hate is that I can't use ctrl-f and other fun and exciting text finding tools. ;-P
