Votes in federal parliament take a very very long time as everyone needs to be counted manually. It's time consuming but it's got a heck of a lot of "integrity" -- I'm glad we spend a little more time on important votes, get the count right and make people accountable for how they vote.
I like the way we do it in Canada, however, one thing always bothered me. In parliament, there's no secret ballot, like when us average Joes vote. On one hand, it makes them more accountable for how they vote. What I have a problem with though is that it makes it hard to not "tow the party line" and vote the opposite way that their party wants them to vote.
The idea is that they are supposed to vote to represent the people who elected them. They're *not* supposed to vote according to any "party line". That's one reason why the system we have now is broken. :-/ I read a really interesting sci-fi story (can't find it now) about how now (or shortly in the future), everyone can vote on anything - electronically. It was all structured with wiki's and each elected a leader (called a "jimmy whale" or something like that). Interesting idea.
