Apple's got me

We were going through the rideau center yesterday, and of course we wondered by the mac store. It's not been there long, but I've enjoyed being in there each time we've gone. It's got a very different feeling than a store like bestbuy.

We've been trying to figure out a good way to listen to our music collection on our stereo in the living room. The speakers are hidden behind the couch and the stereo itself is hidden under an end table. We've been debating getting a "good" stereo that we could hook up to an ipod, but even a crappy stereo starts over 100 $. Instead of doing that, we did a little experiment where we bought an AirPort Express Base Station and just plugged the stereo into that. Then I put the iphone remote app on Laura's phone and we can put the computer anywhere we want. One of these days I'm going to have to hook up an actual media server, but this is a good start. ;-)

  1. I got my Wii providing a similar function. If you are truly geeky, you can get the homebrew software running on your Wii, which allows you to watch movies, listen to music, and do lots of other cool stuff. I have a TV Tuner card in my computer. So my computer is the PVR, with the recording directory shared, then I have the Wii hooked up to the TV so that I can watch the recorded shows on the TV. Really nice setup.

  2. The thing that I worry about with modding consoles and running software in non-default space is when they release updates and it nukes out the tweaks.
Software / hardware pisses me off enough when I use the "positive path", I'm not sure I want to cause myself the potential headaches of running homebrew sw.

  3. Well, running homebrew software on the Wii doesn't require physically modifying it any way, so that's a plus. I was definitely a little wary about permanently messing up my Wii, but I haven't had any problems yet. And the updates to the system from Nintendo don't seem to have any effects on the tweaks. Appently they keep on disabling the part that lets you play DVD movies and pirated games, but I don't use that stuff anyway, as I already have a DVD player beside the TV, and well, I don't mind supporting game developers.
Don't get me wrong, I'd much rather have a full media centre computer under my TV, but for now, the Wii fills the role quite well.
