The other week we were out shopping at zellers and the item we wanted one half open and they only had one left. Normally I wouldn't mind, but this was for a gift. We pulled out Laura's phone, checked bestbuy and lo and behold they were 30% cheaper. Sweet!
So we headed over to bestbuy, found the item and... the price wasn't the same as online. It was still cheaper than zellers, but now I felt like we were being ripped off. So we picked up the item, walked up to customer server and showed them the price online and they gave it to us for that price. Of course they didn't fix the price on the shelf, but what can you do.
As a warning to others that have access to "fancy phones", check the online price while you're there to price compare.
Sometimes they can be real jerks about price matching as well. One aspect that I didn't know about (but learned the hard way) is that they'll only price match if the competing store has the item in stock.
ReplyDeleteA year or two ago I went to BestBuy (Merivale) to pick up a fancy Logitech Universal remote that was on sale for about 1/2 price. They didn't have any left, so I walked next door to Futureshop.
They had the remote, but full price. I thought this was great, because I'd also get 10% of the difference as well (probably about $5, since I think it was about $50 price difference).
I found a clerk and told him I'd like to price match the item with BestBuy. The guy looked at me and said "Why don't you buy it at BestBuy then?", so I said (stupidly), that it's not in stock there. Then I got the old "Ooohhh... only price match in-stock items, sorry." What a douche!
If I had been smarter at the time, I would have just said "I want to buy it here because I'll get an extra $5 off!", but it didn't cross my mind that the guy was trying to trick me. Lesson learned!

P.S. - I've found the best time to price match is a Sunday evening when they have a skeleton staff on. At that point, they tell you just to go up to the cash and the cashier will do the price match, and they seem to care a whole lot less.
When I was buying a tv, they will actually phone the other store to check if they have any in stock before they price match. Maybe they wouldn't if it's something like a mouse.
ReplyDeleteIf they didn't price match their own site (or gave me trouble) I was planning on just buying it online and choosing the "pick up in store" option. ;-)
