Well, I think that I am finally in the market for a digital camera. Right now I am thinking about something with 4-5 M px, 3x optical zoom, lots of memory, and small-ish. ;-) Another requirement that I have (because my dad's sucks at this) is
speed. There is nothing worse than seeing the
perfect picture, clicking the button, and having it take 2 seconds to take the shot while you missed that perfect moment.
So, I'm going to shop around for a while. Anyone has anything good / bad to say about any camera or other advice?

The only comment I have is about memory sticks. There are a few types floating around for different types of cameras. Make sure you get one that *supports* high amounts of memory so you can upgrade later.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I prefer having a few medium sized sticks/cards instead of one huge one (eggs in one basket problem if you even lose the stick), but that's up to you.
Transfer rates are also good to look at. Look for USB2 or firewire, so that offloading from your camera doesn't take centuries.
Yes, USB2 or firewire would be great... but right now on my laptop I only have USB1... time to get a new box I guess. ;-P Either that or turn my linux box into a windows box (putting in USB2)
ReplyDeleteMake sure that you get something that you'll want to carry around. This means not too big, and not too expensive. I find that mine is too big to carry around. Next time i'll get a smaller one.
ReplyDeleteTry to get something with as high an optical zoom as possible...digital zoom sucks!..so try to get as high a digital as possible...and DONT GO KODAK!!...Jon and I just got rid of our kodak cuz of all the problems and we got a Nikon with 8x optical zoom. We really shopped around and that was the best deal for what we wanted. Bud dont go Kodak..we and Jons brother have had nothing but super bad luck with them.
ReplyDeleteYeah. Don't pay attention to digital zoom at all. Don't even use it if possible. My camera has a stop on it, so it doesn't do digital zoom unless you really want it to. With 4 or 5 Mpx, you can just crop it using The GIMP later, and still have enough resolution for printing high quality pics.
ReplyDeleteI don't think 8x zoom is practical if you're taking pictures by hand and not with a tripod.
ReplyDeleteOne more thing to consider is the ability to go manual, being able to choose your aperture and shutter speeds.
Keep in mind that the amount of Mpx determines the size of the photo that you want to take and not the quality.
ReplyDeleteI've said this before, but no one's raised it since. If you're buying a camera, make sure that you get one with a flip-out screen. Mine doesn't have this and it's the only thing I don't like about my camera (well, high optical zoom or a decent telephoto lens would nice..).
ReplyDeleteAnother thing you may want to think about is whether you want to get a camera that requires proprietary battery packs or one that works with AAs. (I'd recommend AAs simply because they're more attainable on vacation and because then you don't have to worry about the manufacturer halting production in two years).
