I think that
gmail accounts are starting to flood "nerd" circles. There were
services that are no longer running where you would be able to offer gmail invites. The last time that I saw it running, there was just 20+ just sitting there... Nerds only have so many friends you know. Well, maybe just so many that are
gmail worthy. A lot of people are like "what? Another email account? No thanks.". What they don't understand is how nice the interface is.
A co-worker of mine keeps on giving them away, but then they keep on bumping him back up to 6. One day it will go out of bata, but there will not really be a flood of new accounts 'cause everyone will already have them. I think that their strategy is really smart, but I guess that's why they employ mostly PhD's...

Yeah, i always see GMail threads on this unicycling message board that i read. There will be all sorts on normal unicycling threads and then out of nowhere there's a GMail thread, and they are there all the time. Weird.
ReplyDeleteIs it really that much better than Hotmail? Is it worth switching? Does it really matter that much if the ui is amazing or just plain good?
Think of it as the difference between Kelsey's and a really, really nice restaurant. Kelsey's is good and fills you up, but it's just not the same.
ReplyDeleteI *thought* that hotmail was okay / good UI. GMail is more like warm, soft butter... it just feels nice.
And let me add, I think that things like "normal unicycling threads" is a pretty funny statement. ;-)
Before completely switching to Gmail, you might want to wait. Rumours are that Hotmail is going to significantly raise their storage limits for free accounts. Though this could just be a tactic to get people to hold off switching! Sneaky bastards ... lol
ReplyDeleteIf you were just switching because of storage space, yes, I agree. But even if gmail *only* has 1 Gb of space, I think that I can handle that. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI went ahead and got myself a gmail address, but I haven't really used it yet. I seem to keep forgetting about it.
ReplyDeleteI think one of the reasons I'm hesistant is because it is only a web-based interface, while hotmail offers web-based and through outlook (I know, outlook is evil, but it's still nice to see my email offline)
Does it look like gmail will eventually offer offline support? I may start using it more then
