It looks like I will have to find another way to make backups. I thought that keeping things on CD's would be fine. I was actually planning to do so. I thought that they would degrade over like 15-20 years. Apparently not. So, now I have to figure out a good way to keep data long term, hopefully read only so that viruses can't eat it. Right now I am just relying on hard drive spaces, but I am going to keep digital images, that will get eaten up quickly.
I am thinking about getting another backpack. I just never feel that my bag protects my computer enough, and most of the other bags are either really expensive, ass-ugly, or non-backpacks. I just have to actually got to go toMEC to check it out. I'll add that to my todo list, right after getting my car looked at for all those damn recall notices and getting them to turn off that stupid "check engine" light.

It all depends on what kind of cds you get. My fav blanks are Princo (they sell under the Princo name and a few others). Sadly I can't seem to find them anywhere in town anymore.
ReplyDeleteOn the plus side, HD space is getting to be pretty affordable (basically twice the price of CDR storage). Does anyone else find that scary?! So you could look at picking up a an extra 80G drive (best price/space ratio right now) for backups or something..
(get a pair of HD racks too. they're like $20/ea and even though it might not seem like it, they're worth every penny you'll spend on them!)
btw, I've still got a ton of CDRs from 1995 that work perfectly. I think the deterioration skyrockets once you put the disks in the sun or leave them exposed to circulating air..
ReplyDeleteAll of those people that bought crappy spool discs are kicking themselves. I only use Verbatim CD-Rs.
ReplyDeleteIf you are going to use hard disks as a backup tool, consider using a RAID setup (RAID-0 is mirrored, i believe). Not only will you have the same thing on 2+ hard disks, but your applications will load faster. Of course if you lose the whole deal to a power surge, you're still SOL.
Tape drives are still out there, they just take a long time to read/write/seek.
Drives are actually cheaper than tapes, and if you use HD racks, they're basically the same thing.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I think RAID (mirroring anyways) is highly overrated. I can understand using it in a business/mission critical situation, but honestly for the home user you don't need up-to-the-second backups. Especially if you end up hosing something like your windows install (since the install on the mirrored drive will be hosed as well).
Weird ... your blog is up for me, but only when I go to '/jim/index.html'. When I do just '/jim/' I get nothing. Must be a server problem ... I'll look into it.

ReplyDeleteI have had that problem happen to me several times now. I just clear the cache and the page loads fine again. ;-) I still don't know what's up.
ReplyDeleteMaybe somehow the file gets corrupted, but the file stamp is the same, and when Mozilla just makes a request of the head or whatever to see if it needs the page, (and it "doesn't"), it doesn't download the page off the server and you are stuck with the cached page.
Does anyone know how to force a page refresh in Mozilla (like ctrl-F5 in IE)?
