Quick question before I run off to bed... are we considered the class of '03, or 04? I never went to school in 04, but that's when the ceremony was... Okay, I'm done my random thought now.
Listening to: Robert Miles - Dreamland - 03 - Fantasya
Quick searching of the U Ottawa web page led to this link, which says this. Summa cum laude: 9.0 and above Magna cum laude: from 8.0 to 8.9 Cum laude: from 7.0 to 7.9 I'm pretty proud of my Magna Cum Laude. However, worth pointing out, is that these designations are not the same university wide, for instance, in the faculty of education, the ranges are: Cum laude 8.0 - 8.9 Magna cum laude 9.0 - 9.4 Summa cum laude 9.5 - 10.0
Stupid html removal. Here's the links Faculty of Engineering http://www.uottawa.ca/academic/info/regist/crs/0203/gngEN/gng-eng6.htm Faculty of Education http://www.uottawa.ca/academic/info/regist/crs/0203/eduEN/edu-eng6.htm
I thought that Magna C.L. was for 8.5 - 8.9, and C.L. was 8.0 - 8.4 Good to know. Hey Jimmy, why didn't you come? It only happens once (for me at least...)
Do you think that different faculties have different definitions of Cum Laude because they consider it harder in different faculties to get better grades? Thus, do they think that a 7.5 in Engineering is equal to an 8.5 in Education? That's the only thing that seems reasonable to me for the difference. What's it like in Arts? 10.0 = SCL 9.9 = MCL 9.8 = CL Haha!
If that's the case, Scott's scale should have been used for software engineering. We had it much easier than other engineering programs. Maybe not in terms of workload, but certainly in terms of difficulty. The other programs are far more calculus/math intensive. We had it pretty easy!
Well, that's my question. Do you think that different faculties assign CL, MCL, and SCL based on some system where the first compare themselves to the other faculties? other Universities? other programs? On your point though, didn't SEGs often do better in CEG, ELG, and particularly CSI courses than even most of their own students? Perhaps our program was easier, but i seem to remember us being pretty good compared to a lot of the students in other programs. Does that mean that students in other programs got lower marks on the whole and that their system would go something like: 6.0-6.9 = CL 7.0-7.9 = MCL 8.0-10.0 = SCL?
hee hee... no, it's not really important at all. My brother asked "Is 'cum laude' latin for 'big head'?" But no one has answered my original question: are we "class of '03" or "class of '04"?
What GPA ranges are assigned for 'cum laude', 'magna cum laude' and 'summa cum laude'?

ReplyDeleteI agree. I think that it's much harder to mark a design as "good" or "bad" compared to math where there really is *only* one right answer.

Some schools don't even have "... cum laude" designations at all. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Damn... I would have much rather been "class of '03". Ah well. It doesn't matter.
