So, now that I have that part figured out, I have to check out the rest of the guys (or women) in my riding and see who would be the less of evils. I don't think that I would have a problem with voting for any party if I really liked their message. But what I keep on thinking about is that who ever I vote for, I have to believe that they are responsible (since it's a responsible government... hahaha...).
Let's think about it for a couple of minutes. Think of someone that you trust enough to give 1/2 your pay cheque to, someone who you trust to look after you if you get sick, and someone that will stand up for you about what you believe. That's what you are picking when you vote.

The sponsorship scandal, though a waste of money, is an unfortunate distraction from the real issues of this election.
ReplyDeleteWhile it is nice to have a "responsible" and "trustworthy" government, we can't blame the government itself completely. The public has to be interested enough in those issues to press politicians to enforce rules amongst themselves. Yes, the public has this power, they just need to wield it.
But in the good times we were having with the Liberals, we were complacent, distracted and apathetic. I'm not saying that the sponsorship scandal is excusable, it definitely is not. But I think the public has to share the blame for the lack of accountability, built up over tens or even hundreds of years of governing status quo. The public has to be interested in politics and their right to information.
Because of the sponsorship scandal we'll have microscopes on more projects. We'll have increased accountability. The public sees how much of a waste it is (also the gun registry), so it will become a politcal issue. Governments will have to be more open.
The Librals will be more accountable in their next government, so don't discount them simply because of a few rotten eggs as bad projects. They've done a lot of good for Canada and the Canadian public. The Conservatives are a step backward in many ways, in my opinion.
I agree with you completely Ryan.
ReplyDeleteStephen Harper scares the crap out of me! I've lost sleep over the thought of having someone with his right-wing views at the head of the country.
I just plain don't think that his views represent those of the majority of Canadians.
Someone said a while back, that it wasn't so much a case of Dalton McGuinty being elected in Ontario as it was of Ernie Eves being tossed out. Right now it seems like that's what people want to do to the Liberals (toss them out). I think that there's alot of risk there for two reasons.
1) The party in National power has the ability to affect much more than a provincial government.
2) As much as the Liberals are being raked over the coals for the scandals, the fact is that in the last 11 years there hasn't really been all that much to complain about (besides the recent scandals). Money can easily be replaced. Civil liberties and human dignity cannot.
just my feelings on the matter...
I have to check out the rest of the guys (or women) in my riding and see who would be the less of evils.
ReplyDeleteI can't remember where I saw it, but if you vote for the less of 2 evils, you're still casting a vote for evil.
I heard a quote somewhere that went:
ReplyDelete"A government that governs least, governs best."
I agree with this statement, for the most part. So, which party does this statement best apply to? Liberal?
I just came back from my riding's Candidate debate, and suffice it to say that it totally made up for both of the televised Leaders debate. The intelligence level was turned up a few notches, and it was refreshing to hear debates about your own neighbourhood instead of ambiguous platitudes and overused sound bytes. I always cast my vote, but this is the first time I actually felt excited about participating in a democracy. I definately recommend checking yours out.
ReplyDeleteJust a thought...
ReplyDeleteI have always thought of the Green Party as being one of those "crackpot" parties on the fringe. This year, however, I have done extensive research on party platforms and issues and they've really got a deeper, more solid and well-rounded "vision," so to speak. In all likelihood they won't win very many seats. For me though, in many respects they might actually be more than simply the "lesser of the evils" in this election.
