One of the things that you can have control of when working in a small team is your own title. Now, since I am on the bottom of the heap and no one reports to me I can't take any title that I have too seriously. So after getting a new member to our team and giving her the title of Project Alchemist, it was decided that we should all have fun titles. It was suggested that I can be Development Grand Poobah which I really like.
What title would you choose for yourself?
Being the youngest, and most recently graduated member of my team, I'll have to give myself the title of "Executive In Charge Of Moving Into the 21st Century". I choose this because, although the members of my team are quite good and really churn out some good code, you can always see things creeping into the code from the old days, things that we (the community of software developers) have decided in the past few years are bad ideas.
ReplyDeleteIsn't the Grand Poobah the "Head Honco", the leader? In which case if you're at the bottom of the ladder it doesn't really match. :)
ReplyDeleteI remember back in grade 9 at my old high school there was a senior jazz band that called themselves "The Paramedics", which I thought was pretty cool. Totally unrelated to jazz, but still worked.
I always end up montoring process, metrics and people to see if everything stays on track. That's what engineering is all about, of course ... but a more accurate job title might be Project Nanny.
ReplyDeleteWell, since I am one of two developers and was here first, I guess I could be called "lead developer"...
ReplyDeleteThat's my point. Development Grand Poobah is kind of oxymoronic. It's like a janitor calling himself Vice President of Sanitation. ;)
ReplyDeleteAnd that's why it's funny...
ReplyDeleteWay back I used to be a dish washer i.e. "Dish Pig".
We really didn't like that title so we changed it to "Culinary Aquatic Engineer". It had a better ring to it. ;-P
Hehe, interesting! I'm suprised that the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) weren't after you for using the "Engineer" title improperly. ;)
