Finally more room

I finally have more disk space. Now I can spread out past the 18 G that I have for my whole computer. I got a external drive case and 120 G hard drive from deals direct. Man, I still have my original P 100 computer (that my sister uses). It had a 3 G drive at first, and I thought that was a lot at the time. I quickly found out that it isn't. Ah well. The setup / install was pretty easy. I just didn't know how to get the Computer Management program in XP that I can manage drives etc.

I got a WD drive 'cause the place didn't have a Maxtor that I wanted (120 G, 8 M cache) in stock, and he told me that he had seen a lot more problems with the Maxtors. So, we'll see. I just have to make backups of my stuff anyways, I can't trust when it's on a HD, even if it is write protected.

Now the next step is for me to change my songs into mp3, acc, ogg, or something similar. I think that I will re-rip all my cd's (I do own a lot) just to get the tags all nice and pretty. Ryan recommended that I use iTunes to rip cd's. (I don't think that AudioMan can do that yet) I am using winamp at work, but it takes forever to rip a cd not using the pro version because the fastest it will do it is 2x. And I refuse to use Media Player, just because. :-P

Now, having gone on like that, what do you recommend I use to quickly rip the songs? I don't really care what format it goes to right now (mp3, ogg, acc) since I no longer have an mp3 player (it died after 3 weeks. Yay futureshop). I'm still using winamp 2.76 at home, but I might switch to something like 5. We'll see. Ideally, I would have something that would do a directory watch and add any new songs to the "all songs" playlist. It would have a small memory foot print, have the basic features (by shortcut key) like track forward, random, ... and have the jump feature. I find this the most useful feature of them all. So now it's your turn, what's good out there, 'cause I'm looking. ;-)

  1. Hmmm. I guess we'll see about the Maxtor's then...

  2. On a related note, if you are looking for a new mp3 player, and aren't interested in shelling out your life's savings on an iPod (or other HD player), i recommend a Sony MiniDisc player. The discs only hold 80 megs, but i'm damn satisfied with mine. Plus, it only cost(ed?) me $150. Kibbee and my gfriend bought one each the week after i got mine, due to my satisfaction. Of course, since i know Kibbee's eyes a welling up right now, i will give him the credit for giving me the idea to buy a MD player over the iPod. Beware though, the software is extremely poor and bloated like a MF.

  3. I really liked my USB / flash memory stick mp3 player. I liked it because I didn't have to burn any disks, I could quickly add / remove songs, and I didn't need anything other than a USB port to move songs onto it.
It only took 1 AAA battery, so it was really small and lasted long. It held 128 MB, and I could use it for moving files to / from work. I think that I would try and replace it with something similar in the future. More likely I'll just get a all in one PDA, cell phone, mp3 player (, coffee maker, ...).
I'll miss it. I called it Tommy.

  4. My MP3 player cost me 110$ more than a year ago and nothing has gone wrong with it. Also, if you are interested in a minidisc. I saw one in a pawn shop near my house for 70$. More than likely stolen, but stolen things do work.

  5. Yeah. it took me a long while for scott to finally listen to me about the minidisc thing. They are a lot better now that they transfer over USB, about 20 minutes to record a disc on my slow ass computer. It would be faster on a better processor. It takes 1 'AA' battery, and last for like 30 hours on a rechargeable one. Plus, for 5 bucks, you can buy an extra disc. If you're going running, just bring one disc, long car ride, when you got space, bring 7 or 8. Then you got all the music you need. You can pick them up at futureshop now for like 129.95, or something for the base model.
As for buying one of those all in one mp3/ pda/ cell/ calculator/ hard drive/ toaster units, i'd rather buy something that does one thing extremely well, then something that does 17 things but doesn't do them as well.
The only problem I have with the minidisc is that they don't allow you to store data on them, just music, even though it's completely possible, and been done before, but they just don't feel like implementing it.

  6. Oh, about mp3 encoders. You should check out source forge for some encoding/ripping software. Even though they have only open source stuff, they still have quite a large selection of software for windows machines. I'm sure you can find something there that will get teh job done without you having to worry about speed restrictions without paying and all that stuff.

  7. Anyone have any other suggestions? Anything that they use that they like?
