Hard drives

I have finally bitten the bullet and ordered an external usb hard drive case for my laptop (after giving up on Samba). Now my question for everyone is what type of hard drive should I get? I'm thinking of something in the 120 Gb range, but I really don't know what is the "best brand" out there right now, or really what options (I'm not a hw guy). I'm looking at a couple of places to possibly buy (or even future shop). What do you guys think?

  1. Personally, I've decided that I'm now a Maxtor zealot. I've had nothing but good experiences with them.. (currently have six maxtor drives).
The manufacturers you want to avoid are IBM (after the Deathstar fiasco), Fujitsu (for 3.5" drives), and Seagate (do they even make drives anymore?).
I'd also be a little leary of getting a Western Digital drive. I've heard numerous horror stories about WD drives, but then again I've heard the same thing about Maxtor drives.

  2. I have a dead maxtor sitting on the shelf right now, so i'm not going to say anything good about them. I've also had a fujitsu die. These are the only brands i have owned. The older fujitsu and maxtor are running strong. The new ones have died. Wow, over 6 years, i've had 4 hard drives, and 2 of them have died. I think i have bad luck.
I think the problem is due to overuse. The big drives i have are usually used for storage, including mp3's. I have music playing a lot, and usually a couple things downloading as well. I wonder if the cause of death is overuse on these things. The smaller older drives just store operating systems and programs.

  4. Oh, didn't even see the comment about where to buy.
DO NOT buy your drive at Futureshop. If you're going to have data on the thing, you probably don't want some minimum-wage-earning twit knocking it around on a skid when it gets unloaded from their trucks.
All of my drives were bought at either DealsDirect or OEM express. (If you want to go to OEM, just take the 1 or 7 down bank and get off at Catherine. Then walk west for three or four blocks IIRC..).
