Now, when I get everything on the drive as I want, I'll be able to do things like re-rip or re-tag songs as needed; weed out the bad songs; get rid of ones that I have in there a couple of times; be aware of the ones that I have the original songs for and ones that I do not. But mostly, it's to get stuff off my computer so I'm not so squished for space, yet still be able to enjoy music. Now what I'm going to do is find all the music in my house and put it on that drive. That way I'll be able to wire a home sound system (eventually) that will run off a hard disk and play pleasant music in the background. That's my goal. We'll see how the journey goes.
Listening to: the sound of my hd and dvd drive transferring mp3's. Oh the joy!
Hey Jim,
ReplyDeleteLittle suggestion :
Before you start moving too much stuff onto your new drive, write down a plan on how you plan to store things and stick to it. (It's MUCH easier to organize things starting from a blank drive and even easier to stick with it...)
Otherwise you'll end up like me and have 20Gigs worth of stuff scattered all over your 'data' drive in various places...
Right now my plan for music is to have a /music/purchased and a /music/othermeans dir structure. As for how else I am going to do it, it's sort of up in the air. I have a bunch of different ways going on at the same time. Some of my music is organized by genre (how I originally had it), and other stuff I just have artist - albumn folders... ;-)
ReplyDeleteYou two seriously have too much time on your hands. I can't believe that i just wasted 10 minutes of my life reading your discussion on organization of harddrives. You guys need to back away from your computers for a little while, i say.
ReplyDeleteHey man, it's all about saving time and being able to find things quickly. And it took you 10 minutes to read that post? Yikes... Time for speed reading lessons.
ReplyDeleteif you're just going to use the drive for straight up multimedia/large file storage, don't really worry about setting it up too much. Just make 1 really large partition and throw everything on it. Don't bother making partitions for certain things like MP3's and stuff. Because they will fill up, and then you'll have different stuff on different partitions. And that just sucks to manage.
ReplyDeleteIf you're going to load the OS and applications on there, it's probably a good idea to create some partitions for those. But i don't think you're using it for that, since you're running it off USB 1.1
With the speed of USB 1.1, it might make sense to borrow a computer with USB 2, and transfer the data through that, over the network. You'll top out at 100 Mb/s, because of the network, but that's a lot better than 12 Mb/s. Also might look into getting a USB 2.0 card. Maybe just buy one, and then return it when all your major file transfer is done.
ReplyDeleteIt's just 1 partition, and I am just using it as a dumping ground for media and other files. I'll be able to move things around easily when things are there. I just have to figure out how I want them.
ReplyDeleteAs for using something and then returning it when I don't need it, I won't do that... if I buy it 'cause I need it, I'll keep it.
No comment. :)
ReplyDeletehahaha... so you made a "no comment comment"? Too funny...
