F%@& parking ticket

Waiting for me at my car tonight was a parking ticket for illegal parking. I was parked at the park-n-ride, not blocking anyone. On inspection, I was actually parking in a hashed area. But I didn't see that when I parked at all because of the amount of salt, ice and snow on the lot. It's even difficult to see the lines when the lot is dry and bare.

Now my question is: Is it worth me fighting the 35 $ ticket? How much time would I have to take off to go to the court date? 1/2 a day? An hour? Do you think that I have a chance? I'm just pissed off about it, but I did park not in a parking spot, even if I didn't know. Ignorance isn't an excuse, but will a judge let me off because of that? I think that I have 15 days to make up my mind... *sigh*

  1. Hmm. From an economic standpoint I think you'd be better or just writing an angry letter to OCTranspo about re-painting the lines (or better) putting up some signs.
    Do you really feel like going the hassle of working late four hours to fight a $35 ticket?

  2. This font really does weird stuff for my eyes. I had to read it a few times before I figured out that "Waiting for meat my car tonite" was actually "Waiting for me at my car tonite"

  3. kibbee: you don't like tahoma? It's the best. A lot better than nasty garamond... ;-P
    Peter: Ya, that's what I have been thinking about too... I think that's how the city makes most of their money: because people are too lazy / busy to fight a ticket that isn't worth *too* much. *sigh*

  4. What's that I hear? Do you dare to diss Garamond? That font is a lifesaver - slightly smaller than Times New Roman at the same font level, it's perfect for trying to fit documents that would otherwise spill on other pages ... plus, it's just pretty to look at!
    Ahem, having said that, yes I realize that my comments page is pretty ugly right now ... I'll get around to it eventually :) (Looks fine on my laptop ...)

  5. I've fought a speeding ticket before. Was in and out in 15 minutes because the cop who issued it didn't show up... just FYI...!

  6. Ummm... I mean this other person (definitely not me) fought a speeding ticket that THEY got (again, not me)... hee hee...
    I bet you didn't even know that a Tercel can go over the speed limit!

  7. 35$ is nothing Jim compared to the cost of gas an parking to fight it.
    My 2 cents.

  8. I don't think i have tahoma. I'm running linux, and I don't think it comes with tahoma by default. I'm not sure what font it's throwing at me.

  9. I think that it would be the next one on the style sheet.

  10. Jim: Tahoma is a Windows font and is generally not web-safe. On the Mac I'm just seeing Times New Roman (Tahoma is a sans-serif font and what I'm seeing is serif, likely the browser default Times New Roman).
    I don't know what's happening on Kibbee's end but it's probably trying to use an equivalent font and coughing. It's not really your fault because the browser should say "I don't have that font, use Times New Roman." But the OS is probably mapping Tahoma to some crappy Linux equivalent.
    Jim, you can be a little more friendly to people without Tahoma by changing the font line to:
    font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;
    You can have as many fonts in there as you want. If the client doesn't have a font, it goes to the next one. It's always good to end these lines with either "serif" or "sans-serif", the class of the font. At least then we'll see a sans-serif font (like Arial) instead of Times New Roman.
    By the way, serifs are the hanging doohickies on letters in a font. Times New Roman has them, Arial does not. For more info, see the Wikipedia:

  12. haha, do I get to name myself? cause that name sucks ;)

  13. I'm going to send jim an e-mail, so he can see the font I'm getting on my end. It's not as bad as ryan's though, sans-serif (no feet) fonts always end up showing up way to small in Linux. Good thing Firefox has quick keys to change the font size. I always have to change it when going to ryan's site

  14. hahaha... thanks for the help Ryan. And I think that name is pretty funny...
    The blog body is now:
    font-family:tahoma, arial, sans-serif;
    I hope that works out for people.
    I think that I actually *will* fight the ticket... hopefully it won't be too much time out of my day. I work a lot of extra time anyways, so I can probably work it in. I'll think more about it over the weekend though.

  15. On the Mac I see sans-serif in the post body, but serif everywhere else. :)

  16. I left everywhere else at the default... I've only ever changed the blog body...
    If anyone wants to suggest (email) me style sheets that they would like to see here, please do and I'll try them out. ;-)

  19. I know this post is from 2004, but I came across it in google looking for info on fighting parking tickets. I found this site and thought I'd share with anyone else the comes along after me looking for the same info. Fight Parking Tickets Yourself: http://www.rebel101.com/fight_parking_ticket.asp

  20. Little Secret... you dont have to pay parking tickets. They never go to collections (its not worth it). The city will call you, pretend that they are a collections agency but they are not. They can't do anything. All bark no bite. You can even ask them "if I don't pay it won't appear on my credit, right" and they will have to admit that. The only danger is that if you get another ticket they can tow you.
