[above edited] I had left out Laura before because 1) I am an idiot and 2) because, well, see number 1...
After skating we went to the Oak right near the queensway for a drink, where we saw the last of the Ottawa vs. Toronto game. Every time I see the Leafs play, I can't help think that they are just a bunch of thugs. If you listen to Toronto fans, they will say that "they just do what needs to get done to win". Ya, sure, whatever. They play dirty hockey, hitting and smacking the other team just to piss them off. What, can't they win by just puck handling and good team work? Well, if they can, they don't. A lot of my family are Leafs fans (since they are in TO) and just write off that this is how to win. Well, other teams don't play dirty, and they win. Grrrrr... Okay, that's enough for now.

Amen.
ReplyDeleteGo Sens.
As much as you hate the Leafs for playing dirty, that's just good hockey. Playing the physical game is what will get you somewhere in the playoffs, which is why Ottawa always gets creamed at some point.
ReplyDeleteIf the ref doesn't call it or the league doesn't suspend anyone then obviously it's within the rules. I like the physical game more than the style (European or Gretzky style) game. Style hockey is boring. Bring on the Leafs.
Last night's game was really quite rough I noticed. Check out the penalty summary.

Seems that apparently Toronto wasn't really within the rules, as they drew 21 penalties for the way they played. The leafs should really tone it down a bit. I mean, come on, Domi scored up 34 penalty minutes himself. Almost makes you wish they rolled over the minutes he couldn't serve to the next game.
Dude, physical hockey is a far cry from good hockey. Style hockey is what won Team Canada the Gold medal in the last Olympics, but if that was boring then I guess we like different games. I like the fast kind with breakaways that don't get mauled.
ReplyDeleteAnd don't even pretend that what ref's let go by in the playoffs are within the rules.
I have to agree with Kibbee and Jan. There's quite a difference between physical hockey and "dirty" hockey. Finishing your check or using your body to maintain control of the puck is a far cry from pummelling a guy with a jaw-guard on.
ReplyDeleteIf you want to watch 2-3 hours of straight up fighting, go to a boxing match.
Hey, that's what penalties are for. If the Senators can't capitalize on that many penalties they deserve to lose. That's what playoff hockey is going to be like -- they better get used to it.
ReplyDeletePlayoff hockey is NOT like the last Sens/Leafs game. If you look at the PIM stats from last post-season, you'll see penalities occur quite a bit less when each game is worth so much. Granted, the Sens should have produced something during all those power plays; however, the issue is the Leafs "being a bunch of thugs." Perhaps the Leafs should be preparing for the playoffs and try maintaining some more composure.
